Iron Man 3: Skimping on the Iron Man to Get to the Iron in the Man

Iron Man 3

With all the Iron Man suits and Iron Man imitators flying around in Iron Man 3, the Marvel series is in danger of diluting its tent pole.  It’s all a grand diversion, just like Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin character and the homey adventure with a kid that takes place in a fictional small town just outside of Chattanooga (plug for my newly adopted hometown).  Sure, it’s not what you paid to see or expected to see but it still makes for some great heart candy for the explosive eye candy  that must come later.  Director Shane Black generously gives his actors acting moments to match  action beats.  Set pieces like an aerial free fall from Air Force One that turns terror into a Kum-Ba-Yah, the destruction of the Stark compound and the finale featuring Iron Man prototypes coming cavalry like to the rescue are definitely the best stunt pieces put on film.   Guy Pearce gets way too much screen time and Ben Kingsley not enough, with Don Cheadle and the current most beautiful woman on earth,  Gwyneth Paltrow  sharing the balance of Downey-Stark screen space—resulting in a pleasing Tao of a movie.   Iron Man 3 gets a B+.
