The Way Way Back (2013) Poster The Way Way Back is a gentle reverberating coming of age comedy about a shy kid, Duncan (Liam James) spending a New England beach resort summer with the man (Steve Carell) his mom (Toni Collette) has settled for rather than the one he wants to settle in with. The alternate family, the movie’s golden substitute for Duncan’s uninvolved father who doesn’t want him in his life is Owen, the man-child manager of a stuck in time 80’s water park who enjoys being the wise father figure to the minions of divorce fueled lonely kids who adore his non-condescending approval and friendship. Owen is played by Sam Rockwell in a scruffy beach bum tone that matches the mantras he doles out and makes him the perfect Peter Pan for all the lost boys surrounding him. The Way Way Back is a gentle reverberating coming of age comedy about a shy kid, Duncan (Liam James) spending a New England beach resort summer with the man (Steve Carell) his mom (Toni Collette) has settled for rather than the one he wants to settle in with. The irony that keeps The Way Way Bay a winning charmer for long time screen actors and first time directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash is that this New England resort is a Spring Break for adults who want to drink away their adult responsibilities just at the time when their tag along children need  them to be parents the most.   As Rash put it in an interview “”We all evolve, but the place we go to in the summer remains the same.”  The Way Way Back gets a B+.
