Europa Report: Giving in to the Science in the Fiction

Posted: August 6, 2013 in Movies

Europa Report, a science fiction found footage reconstruction of a doomed trip to a moon of Jupiter delights in keeping the science in the fiction and the awe in the science.  The discovery that these scientist (Christian Camargo, Anamaria Marinca, Michael Nyqvist, Daniel Wu, Karolina Wydra and Sharlto Copley) find on Europa at the cost of their lives is both expected and more mind bending historic than the average encounter with hostile ET’s that dominates the summer blockbuster season.  Ultimately, Europa Report is a story about what scientists will sacrifice to bring great discoveries to mankind.  The trappings of a horror film intrude to show how scientists adapt when the experiments brings data and results beyond what they planned, when life insists on expanding and exploring the world beyond the beaker.   The ending,  a mating of 2001 and ET, might seem anticlimactic to the diehards expecting big sinister things to happen, but ups the awesome in the discovery in a way that shows the elation of the scientific mind.   Europa Report gets a B+.
