Not So Happily Ever After: The Sad Life of Disney Characters in the Real World

Posted: May 6, 2014 in Movies

Disney Princesses and other characters excel in their own fantasy world.  If it were real life it would be a different story.  Mulan would live in a smog ridden China.  Bambi would be a prize trophy head on the wall of  some rich billionaire’s den.  Dumbo would live a lonely painful life as an abused circus elephant.  The Little Mermaid would be an oil soaked victim of next great industrial spill.  The characters of the Princess and the Frog would only be able to dine in colored only restaurants.

That is what animator Jeff Hong sees as the real life fate of all Disney characters– a life of “Unhappily Ever After”.  The series gets both its humor and shock by extending everything to its depressing logical real life conclusion.  It is touching and heartbreaking at the same time.

Hong currently is a storyboard animator for Nicklodeon but has worked on several Disney movies from Hercules, Mulan and The Emperor’s New Groove.

“I have a huge appreciation for fine arts and internet humor,” Hong says. “Not that I think it’s exactly fine art, but I like that it’s bringing issues into discussion,” Hong noted in an interview for the site the creators project.
